A disorder characterized by a decrease in production of parathyroid hormone by the parathyroid glands. Decreased production or secretion of parathyroid hormone by the parathyroid gland, resulting in hypocalcemia due to decreased release of calcium and phosphate from bone matrix, decreased renal calcium reabsorption, and decreased renal production of 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D-3, which decreases intestinal absorption of calcium. Hypoparathyroidism is also associated with hyperphosphatemia as a result of hypophosphaturia. |
