DEFINITION

A family of serine/threonine protein kinases that have a structurally conserved catalytic subunit and a regulatory subunit that are connected by a hinge domain.

DesignNote

There are 3 classes of protein kinase C isozymes based on the molecular requirement for activation. Conventional isozymes need calcium ions, diacylglycerol and phospholipids for activation. Novel isozymes require diacylglycerol and are not regulated by calcium ions, while atypical isozymes require neither diacylglycerol nor calcium ions.
