DEFINITION

Tenascin (2201 aa, ~241 kDa) is encoded by the human TNC gene. This protein is involved in neuron migration and axon guidance.

DesignNote

Hexameric extracellular matrix glycoprotein transiently expressed in many developing organs and often re-expressed in tumors. It is present in the central and peripheral nervous systems as well as in smooth muscle and tendons.

Tenascin (hexabrachion, cytotactin) is an extracellular matrix protein that promotes cell attachment with spatially and temporally restricted tissue distribution in many developing organs. It is a hexameric, multidomain protein with disulfide-linked subunits. A C-terminal domain is similar to fibrinogen. Tenascin also contains type III units, similar to those in fibronectin, and EGF-like repeats. In the CNS, tenascin C is expressed primarily by astrocytes. Tenascin expression is induced by serum as well as TGF-beta.
