A disease caused by an infection with the protozoan parasite Leishmania. This disease is characterized by biphasic fever, hepatosplenomegaly, pancytopenia, wasting, darkening of the skin, or may be asymptomatic. Transmission is through the bite of an infected female phlebotomine sandfly. Confirmation is by identification of Leishmania from a tissue or blood sample, or detection of antibodies against Leishmania. |
